Holidays are a time for some much-deserved R&R, however unforeseen circumstances during our travels can really spoil the fun. While it may be obvious to many that obtaining travel insurance is a must, finding the right travel insurance to suit your individual needs may not always be that simple. To make it easier, InsureandGo have shared what you should look out for when choosing a travel insurer.

Where are you travelling?

You need to make sure your policy covers all regions/countries you will be travelling to, as some insurers do not cover certain countries, most notably those that have travel warnings in place.

You can search Smart Traveller for the latest travel alerts for countries all around the world and always understand your insurer’s Policy Wordings to understand what destinations they do not cover.

Modes of transportation

Most policies will automatically include coverage for flights, however you may need to buy tailored insurance if you plan on taking a cruise during your holiday. Even when cruising around Australia, it is important to consider cruise travel insurance since you most likely will not have Medicare coverage once you leave port.

Having cruise insurance for both domestic and international holidays may also cover you for instances of cruise delays, cabin confinement, medical evacuations by helicopter, and missed excursions due to covered circumstances.

Covering your planned travel activities

Whether you plan on enjoying time on jet skis or flying through the air on zip-lines, you want to make sure all your planned travel activities will be covered. It’s not all doom and gloom if your activity is excluded, as some insurers will enable certain activities to be added to your policy for an extra charge.

Should you be planning a winter getaway, you may need to add winter sports coverage onto your policy if you plan on enjoying some downhill skiing, snowmobiling, or ice skating.

Pre-existing medical conditions

Many pre-existing medical conditions may be included on your policy already or simply require an additional cost to provide coverage. Even if you’re condition is not covered, you may still be able to get coverage for claims that come about due to causes that are unrelated to your pre-existing condition.
